Akron, OH Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Sec. 3 (Walls and Fences) applies its height limits to all sites citywide, and where a separate screening requirement calls for a taller wall or fence, that stricter screening standard controls instead. The code organizes standards by wall and fence "type" tied to yard location. Under the Side/Rear Yard Wall and Fence Types in Sec. 2, Type C5 (intended for residential side and rear yards) caps wall/fence height at a maximum of 6 feet, while Type C6 (intended for commercial and industrial side and rear yards) allows a taller maximum of 8 feet, recognizing that commercial and industrial parcels need more screening and security depth than a house lot.

Front and side-street yard fence types are treated more restrictively because they face the public realm: the Design and Installation standards at Sec. b specifically call out chain-link fencing, stating that chain-link fences in the front yard of residential uses cannot exceed 4 feet in height, well under the 6- and 8-foot limits that apply behind the house. The same Design and Installation subsection also requires every wall, fence and screen to be set back from the property line consistent with the applicable screening and wall/fence standards, bars placement within any required drainage or utility easement, and specifically prohibits any wall or fence from interfering with visibility at intersections or driveways, the corner-sightline protection built into the height and placement rules.
