Blue Earth County, MN Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 24-302 of the Blue Earth County zoning ordinance sets two related fence limits that apply across the unincorporated county. Subsection (f), Traffic visibility, caps anything on a corner lot, including fences, walls, plantings or other obstructions, at 36 inches measured from the centerline elevation of the street, if it would block a driver's view approaching the intersection; that limit runs regardless of zoning district. Subsection (g), Fences, then sets district-based height limits: in the Agricultural (A), Country (C), Rural Residence (RR) and Rural Townsite (RT) districts, fences may not exceed six feet in the side and rear yards or 42 inches in the front yard, though that limit does not apply to livestock fences.

In the county's business and industry districts (GB, HB, LI and HI), the general fence height cap is six feet, but a security fence topped with barbed wire may go to eight feet. None of these fence rules carry a setback requirement of their own; a fence can sit directly on the property line subject only to the boundary-line agreement rule in the same subsection. A homeowner planning a privacy fence on a corner lot in an RR district has to satisfy both limits at once: the 36-inch sight-triangle cap near the intersection, and the six-foot/42-inch height caps everywhere else on the lot.
