Sec. 54-260(1) sets the general residential ceiling: all fencing in a residential district shall not exceed six feet in height, unless otherwise specified elsewhere in the division. Front yards get a much tighter rule under Sec. 54-260(2): a fence there must be decorative, at least 80 percent open by the area of the smallest rectangle enclosing it, no taller than three feet, set back at least one foot from the property line or two feet from a public sidewalk, and no longer than 50 percent of the lot's width measured at the front property line.

Corner side yards are governed by Sec. 54-260(3): a fence must be set back at least ten feet from the property line, unless it is three feet tall or shorter, in which case a one-foot setback is enough, and no corner-side fence may sit inside the vision triangle required by Sec. 54-255. Interior side yards carry no setback from the property line under Sec. 54-260(4), and rear yards on interior or corner lots likewise have no rear setback requirement under Sec. 54-260(5)a, though a rear yard abutting a street needs a five-foot setback and a gate for street-side maintenance access.

Sec. 54-255 defines that vision triangle as the area formed by the right-of-way lines of two intersecting streets, with sides 15 feet long for residential property and 30 feet long for nonresidential property, inside which no fence may be located at all. Commercial and industrial districts get a separate, taller allowance under Sec. 54-261: fencing there may run up to eight feet, following the underlying district's setback rules rather than the residential scheme.
