3 through Code of Ordinances section 22-193(14) to spell out how a backyard fire pit may operate. The device must enclose the fire with screens and a lid, or use a chimney, and burn only aged logs or commercially produced compressed logs. It must sit at least ten feet from the nearest structure, tree, vehicle or building, and at least ten feet from any property line. Once lit, the lid and side screens must stay secured until the fire is out, though a recreational fire used to cook food is exempt from the lid requirement while food is actually on the flame.

A person 18 or older must attend the fire at all times until it is fully extinguished, and a water source or other extinguishing method must be immediately accessible whenever the fire is burning. The ordinance also bars use that emits offensive or objectionable smoke or odors, or that becomes hazardous for any other reason, and requires operation per the manufacturer's guidelines. Fireplaces built into a deck by a landscape professional using stone, concrete blocks or other noncombustible material are exempt from the lid/screen requirement but must meet every other condition. 00 plus enforcement costs, applies to violations of this section, with each day a violation continues after notice counted as a separate offense.
