Coeur d'Alene, ID Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 17.06.815 of the Coeur d'Alene Municipal Code sets fence heights by use. For residential uses in all zoning districts, fences, walls and hedges not greater than six feet (6') in height are permitted on or within all rear and side yard property lines and on or within all front yard setback lines. In any required front yard the limit drops to not greater than four feet (4').

Nonresidential uses in nonresidential zoning districts have a different rule for rear and side lines: on or within the rear or side yard property lines there is no height restriction, except where the fence abuts a residential use, and then the maximum height is six feet (6'). A required front yard is again limited to four feet (4'). Nonresidential uses in residential districts also get six feet (6') on rear, side and front setback lines and on any street side yard setback line.

Height is measured under Section 17.06.810B from the top of the fence or wall at its highest point to the finished grade of the adjacent lot. If the fence sits on a mound, the mound counts toward the height. Where parking or loading areas are built above the finished grade next to a fence, height is measured from the top of the parking or loading surface.

Corner lots carry a second limit. Section 12.36.425 makes it unlawful to maintain a hedge, shrubbery, fence, wall or other sight obstruction, except the bole of a tree and buildings, between the heights of three feet (3') and eight feet (8') measured from the elevation at the centerlines of the intersecting streets, where it is a traffic hazard as determined by the city engineer. The vision triangle is measured forty feet (40') along each roadway from the intersection of the edges of two adjacent roadways. Taller fences up to ten feet (10') need a special use permit under Section 17.09.205.
