Freehold Township, NJ Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 190-165 of the Land Use chapter, Article XV, Fence and Buffer Regulations, sets Freehold Township's fence height standards by zone. Subsection A governs residential zones: fences may run up to six feet above ground level to the rear of the front building line, but are capped at three feet when located in front of the building line or in a front yard. For corner lots, the code fixes which side counts as the front by declaring that the facade where the main front door is located shall be considered the front of the house, and it lets a six-foot fence wrap around the side yard facing the side street starting at the rear corner of the house nearest the intersection, running for a distance equal to half the zone's required front setback before continuing to the property line.

Subsection B sets a separate standard for business and industrial zones: fences there may reach six feet in any yard, except that open wire fences used for security may go up to eight feet. Any fence on a lot that abuts one of the Township's designated Scenic Roadway Corridors, whether residential, business, industrial or farm, must also satisfy the additional requirements of the SC Scenic Roadway Corridor Overlay Zone under Section 190-160. All fences, in every zone, must be built entirely inside the property line under Subsection C, with no encroachment into any public right-of-way, and Subsection G requires the finished, framed side of the fence to face outward from the lot.
