Gaston County, NC Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Unified Development Ordinance Sec. ' Botanical gardens get a narrow exception under Sec. 1(E), allowing deer fences up to ten feet high. Outside the residential districts, Sec. 2(A) sets a different, more permissive limit: a maximum fence or wall height of 12 feet within all required setbacks. A separate provision, Sec. 3, removes any height cap entirely for fencing around a correctional facility or public utility structure located within its required setback. Fence height also interacts with the county's corner-visibility rules: Sec. 7 requires no obstruction to vision above two feet within the sight distance triangle at street and driveway intersections, measured 25 feet from the lot corner on streets with 50 feet or less of right-of-way and 40 feet on wider rights-of-way, so a compliant eight-foot side or rear fence still cannot be positioned inside that triangle.

These fence-height standards govern only unincorporated Gaston County property; Gastonia, Belmont, Mount Holly, Cherryville, Dallas, Stanley and Bessemer City set their own separate fence-height limits inside town limits.
