Gilroy, CA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

City Code § 30.34.30(a) sets the base residential fence and hedge height at seven feet, measured from the finished grade on the higher side. Front yard fences or walls taller than three feet above the curb must be set back at least 26 feet from the face of curb, preserving the driveway sightline. On corner lots, fences, hedges or visual obstructions in the street-side yard taller than three feet above the sidewalk must be set back at least 16 feet from the face of curb, and where a corner lot abuts the driveway side of a key lot or an alley, obstructions over three feet must sit 10 feet back from the street-side property line for at least 10 feet along the rear property line.

Corner-lot fences must also comply with the visual obstruction rules of § 20.60. Fences or walls that follow the main building's required setbacks are allowed up to eight feet, provided they sit back at least six feet from any side lot line, and fences along alleys may reach seven feet. Landscape amenities like arbors, trellises and pergolas are capped at eight feet in the front setback and may not block traffic or pedestrian sightlines. Commercial and industrial districts get a separate seven-foot base height with different exceptions under § 30.34.30(b).
