Greenwood, IN Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Sec. 10-03-09.C measures fence height from the topmost point of the fence to the grade of the ground adjacent to the wall or fence, so berms or retaining walls under a fence count toward its height. Any section that extends along the front lot line, or between the primary structure and the front street that runs parallel to and faces the front of the building, may not exceed four feet in height for residential buildings, the tightest limit in the section. Elsewhere on a residential lot, and citywide by default, no fence shall exceed six feet in height, but the code carves out the City's two industrial zones: within the IM and IL zones, fence heights may not exceed ten feet.

A further exception lets fences for schools, parks, and recreation complexes exceed six feet in height to accommodate specific safety and operational needs as determined by the Planning Director, so a taller security fence around a ballfield or campus needs that administrative sign-off rather than a blanket right. The same Sec. 10-03-09 also requires at least 50 percent transparency for front-yard fencing on commercial or residential property under subsection D, working alongside the height caps to keep sightlines open near the street. A fence built taller than these limits without Planning Director approval is a civil zoning violation.
