Laurens County, SC Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Chapter 38, Zoning, of the Laurens County Code is an unadopted placeholder, so the county sets no general cap on fence height for an individual residential lot in the unincorporated area. The only fence standard in the code sits inside the Residential Subdivisions Ordinance's street landscape buffer rules, chapter 33, Appendix A(k)(3). Where a developer combines fencing with the required buffer plantings along a subdivision's exterior road frontage, that fence must match in material, color and construction across its run and stand at least six feet tall.

Separately, every street buffer plan in the county, fenced or not, must respect the visual clearance area at driveway and roadway intersection sight triangles: no sign, planting, fence, building or wall can occupy the space between two and a half feet and ten feet above the curb or pavement inside that triangle, because it would block a driver's view of cross traffic. Lots screened by a landscaped berm rather than visible fencing are not held to the six-foot buffer fence standard unless an HOA's own covenants impose it.

These are subdivision design review standards, checked by the county's Technical Review Committee and Planning staff at preliminary plat and site plan review rather than by a building inspector after the fact, and violations are enforced under chapter 33's general Division 13 penalty at section 33-123: up to $200.00 per day.
