Under Longmont Land Development Code (LMC) Chapter 15.05.100, residential fences and walls may be a maximum of 6 feet tall, and non-residential fences/walls a maximum of 8 feet. Fences in the front yard (between the front lot line and the front facade) are limited to 42 inches and must be at least 50% transparent. Stricter limits apply within sight distance triangles at corners and driveways.
Per the Building Services 'Fences' Building Guide (revised 4/24/19) summarizing LMC 15.05.100, the maximum fence/wall height is 6 feet on residential property and 8 feet on all other property. In a front yard, fences/walls between the front lot line and any portion of the front facade may not exceed 42 inches and must be at least 50% transparent (not opaque). Chain-link or other woven-wire fencing is prohibited in the front yard of a residential lot, except as a temporary fence during construction or when replacing an existing non-conforming fence. On corner or reverse-corner lots, a privacy fence may be built along the street side of the side and rear yards if it sits outside the right-of-way, is set back at least one foot from any sidewalk, has gates that open into the yard, and complies with city sight-distance standards. Sight distance triangle measurements: 30 feet along each curb at a street-street or street-alley intersection; 15 feet along each side of a driveway-street intersection. Within the triangle, no fence or landscape feature less than 50% open may exceed 36 inches above the lower roadway grade; fencing/landscaping that is at least 50% open may go up to 42 inches.
Fences exceeding code height, blocking sight distance, or installed in the front yard in violation of the 42-inch / 50%-transparent rule must be lowered, relocated, or replaced. Building Services and Code Enforcement can require correction, charge re-inspection fees, and pursue municipal code enforcement.
