Longmont, CO Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Longmont Municipal Code § 15.05.100.B.2 prohibits fences built of barbed wire, tin, or sheet metal, or partly of those materials. The only exception applies in industrial districts, where the Director of Planning and Development Services may allow barbed wire as a topping on woven-wire fences if extraordinary circumstances require it for public safety; when permitted, the barbed wire must sit at least six feet above ground level. Section § 15.05.100.B.3 separately prohibits any fence capable of being charged with electricity, except low-voltage commercially available invisible fences used to contain domestic pets. Chain-link and other woven-wire fences also face front-yard placement limits under § 15.05.100.E.2.
