Amplified music rules in Longmont, CO — also called sound permit, PA system, or live music ordinances — set decibel limits, time-of-day restrictions, and when permits are required.
Under LMC § 10.20.100(A), amplified sound is prima facie unreasonable noise at any time of day if it is audible 25 feet from the source or inside a private residence the responsible person has no right to occupy. Permitted special events may produce up to 80 dB at the permit perimeter.
LMC § 10.20.100(A) deems 'amplified sound as defined at section 13.37.020 of this Code audible 25 feet from the source of said sound or within a private residence that the person responsible for the sound has no right to occupy' prima facie unreasonable noise — with no time limitation, so this applies 24 hours a day. The same section carves out an exception: 'amplified sound of 80 decibels or less as measured from the perimeter of the area covered by a use of public places permit for a special event issued pursuant to chapter 13.37 of this Code and city operations such as mowing and maintenance shall not constitute an unreasonable noise.' Authorized public activities (parades, fireworks displays, sports, musical productions) are also exempt under § 10.20.110(D)(5)(ii) to the extent approved by the city.
General penalty: up to $999.00 fine and/or up to 180 days imprisonment in Longmont Municipal Court.
