Longmont follows Colorado state fireworks law (C.R.S. 24-33.5-2001, formerly Article 28 of Title 12). Any firework that leaves the ground or explodes is illegal. Only state-permissible devices (sparklers, fountains, ground spinners, snakes, smoke devices) may be used on private property. Fireworks of any kind are prohibited on Longmont city streets, parks, golf courses, and other public property. Fines run up to $500 and/or 90 days in jail.
Longmont applies Colorado's statewide fireworks framework. Under C.R.S. 24-33.5-2001(11), permissible fireworks are limited to non-aerial, non-explosive consumer devices: cylindrical or cone fountains (up to 75 grams per tube or 200 grams total), ground spinners (up to 20 grams of pyrotechnic composition), sparklers and dipped sticks (up to 100 grams total), illuminating torches (up to 200 grams each), snake or glow worm pellets (up to 2 grams), and toy propellant devices or noise makers containing 50 milligrams or less of explosive composition. The statute expressly excludes aerial devices and audible ground devices including firecrackers from the permissible-fireworks definition. In Longmont, any firework that leaves the ground or explodes (bottle rockets, mortars, Roman candles, M-80s, cherry bombs, firecrackers) is illegal. Even permissible devices may be used only on private property with the property owner's consent; they are banned on city streets, parks, golf courses, and other public property. The Longmont Fire Department reports fines for use of illegal fireworks of up to $500 and/or 90 days in jail. Selling or possessing aerial or explosive fireworks is also a petty offense under C.R.S. 24-33.5-2010, carrying up to 10 days in jail and/or $300 in state fines independent of city penalties. Longmont Fire Services issues annual reminders before July 4 and the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control coordinates statewide enforcement.
Longmont Police and Fire Services enforce the fireworks rules. Fines run up to $500 and/or 90 days in jail per the Longmont Fire Department. Illegal fireworks may also trigger a state petty offense under C.R.S. 24-33.5-2010 (up to 10 days jail and/or $300). Setting off illegal fireworks during a wildfire risk period may also expose the user to civil liability for damages and firefighting costs.
