Macon County, IL Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

048(B) sets the fence, wall, and hedge standards that apply to every residentially zoned lot in the unincorporated county, from R1 Single Family through the RMH manufactured-home districts. Subsection (B)(1) allows a lot-line fence, wall, or hedge up to eight feet tall, but any such structure sitting in a required front yard or corner side yard is capped at three and one-half feet, low enough to keep sightlines open along the street. Subsection (B)(3) adds a stricter corner-visibility rule: within 25 feet of the intersection of any street lines, or of street lines projected, a fence, wall, hedge, or shrubbery in a residence district cannot exceed three feet above the nearest street grade, creating the visibility triangle drivers rely on at intersections.

The eight-foot cap also carries over to nonresidential property that sits adjacent to a residential district under (B)(2), so a business or industrial lot bordering a home cannot wall itself off any higher than a residential neighbor could. 053's off-street parking and screening requirements where those apply, and they interact with the county's general setback and accessory-building standards enforced by the Planning and Zoning Department. A homeowner planning a privacy fence along a corner lot should measure both the 25-foot intersection radius and the front-yard line before building, since a fence compliant in a rear yard can still violate the corner clause if it sits within that visibility zone.
