Meridian's Unified Development Code section 11-3A-7 governs fences. Fences over 6 feet require review, and fences along pathways and common open space are limited to 6-foot open-vision or 4-foot closed-vision. Electric fencing is banned; barbed wire is allowed only as security topping in commercial/industrial districts. Clear-vision standards apply at corners.
Fences in the City of Meridian are regulated by the Unified Development Code (UDC), section 11-3A-7. The code sets standards based on location, height, and material rather than a single citywide number. Per the city's planning guidance, in the area from the front of the house toward the front property line a homeowner may build a fence up to 3 feet solid or 4 feet open-vision, while from the front building setback back to the rear property line a solid (closed-vision) fence may be up to 6 feet tall. For fences adjacent to interior common areas and pathways, the UDC permits either open-vision fencing up to 6 feet or closed-vision fencing up to a maximum of 4 feet (not a combination). Electric wire fencing is prohibited, and barbed wire is allowed only as the top section of security fencing in commercial and industrial districts (C-C, C-G, M-E, I-L, I-H) and only at least 6 feet above grade to the bottom wire. Prohibited fence materials also include boxes, sheet metal, decayed wood, and broken masonry. Fences must be maintained in good repair, kept free of advertising and graffiti, and must not obstruct utility access. Clear-vision (sight-triangle) requirements limit fence and landscaping height near street intersections and driveways for traffic safety.
Fences that exceed allowed heights, use prohibited materials (electric wire, or barbed wire outside permitted districts), or block required clear-vision sight triangles violate UDC 11-3A-7 and are enforced by Meridian code enforcement / planning.
