South San Francisco fence heights are governed by SSFMC Title 20 (Zoning Code). Standard residential limits are 3β4 ft in front yards and up to 6 ft in side/rear yards. The updated zoning code addresses measurement methodology.
Under SSFMC Title 20, fence heights in residential zones are limited by yard location. Front yard fences are typically limited to 3β4 feet. Side and rear yard fences may be up to 6 feet. Height is measured from the lowest existing grade within 3 feet of any point on the fence to the highest point. For fences on retaining walls, height is measured from the lowest grade on the high side to the top of the fence. The updated zoning code prohibits hazardous fencing materials and limits chain-link fencing and concrete block walls in certain contexts.
