St. Peters, MO Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 405.360(B)(2) of the St. Peters Municipal Code sets a general six-foot height cap on any fence, wall, shrub, or hedge in every zoning district, and Subsection (B)(1) confirms no permit is required to erect or alter a fence except where the Code says otherwise. Subsection (D)(2) repeats the six-foot cap specifically for 'R' residential districts. Corner lots carry extra restrictions: under Subsection (D)(4), a fence cannot cross the platted front building line that runs parallel to the front of the house, and along the other platted front building line on a corner lot, a fence may extend ten feet past that line but still cannot enter the sight distance area defined in Section 405.340, the City's corner-visibility standard measured from the St.

Despite the general no-permit rule, Subsection (F)(1) requires a $50 building permit before installing any fence in the 'R-3(A)', 'R-3(B)', a PUD multi-family development, or a commercial or industrial district. Electric fences are exempt from that $50 permit under State law but must still meet the City's aesthetic, right-of-way and drainage rules. A resident who exceeds six feet without qualifying for a district exception, or a builder in an R-3, commercial or industrial district who skips the $50 permit, is out of compliance with Section 405.360.
