St. Peters, MO Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

Section 405.360(B)(1) sets the City's baseline rule: no permit is required for erecting, installing, or altering any fence within the City of St. Peters, except as otherwise required elsewhere in the same Section. Subsection F carves out that exception. For any fence installed within an "R-3(A)" or "R-3(B)" multiple-family district, a multiple-family development inside a Planned Urban District, a "C" Commercial district, or an "I" Industrial district, Section 405.360(F)(1) requires a building permit before the fence is installed, and caps the permit fee at fifty dollars.

Electrified fences are carved out of even that permit requirement under Missouri Statute Section 67.301, RSMo, but the property owner must still meet City rules on aesthetics, access to public rights-of-way, sidewalks, and utility easements, structural soundness, and drainage impact. Wherever a permit applies or not, the same general standards in Subsection B still govern: fences are capped at six feet unless a district rule says otherwise, must be finished within six months of the start of construction, must be kept in good condition with damaged boards replaced and rust removed, and may not be electrified except as Missouri Statutes 67.301 and 67.494 allow. The Planning, Community and Economic Development Department administers fence permits and enforces these standards through its Neighborhood Preservation code enforcement staff.
