Taylor, MI Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 15.03(b) of Taylor's Zoning Appendix A sets residential fence height by yard. Fences in the side and rear yard cannot exceed six feet. On corner lots, a fence can extend into the front yard facing the side street, but only if the neighboring lot's dwelling does not face that same side street, and the fence cannot extend past the front building line into the yard the dwelling itself faces. In the front yard, only decorative fences or walls up to three and a half feet tall are allowed, and they cannot enclose more than 50 percent of the front yard area.

Any fence or wall taller than three and a half feet is barred within ten feet of where a driveway meets the street right-of-way, a rule that also reaches driveways on adjoining lots, protecting sight lines for drivers backing out or turning in. On corner lots, front-yard fences and walls must also satisfy the corner clearance standard of Section 14.03, which keeps the sightline at street intersections clear of obstructions. These standards sit within Article 15's broader fence rules, which bar erecting a fence in the public right-of-way and prohibit any fence or wall that would block a motorist's view exiting a driveway.
