West Allis, WI Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Per the City of West Allis Department of Building Inspections and Neighborhood Services and Revised Municipal Code §13.31, residential fences in West Allis are regulated as follows: side and rear yards may have fences up to 6 feet in height placed up to the property line; fences are not allowed in the required front yard; and any fence located within the corner-lot vision triangle at the intersection of two streets or a street and an alley is limited to 3 feet to preserve driver sightlines. The 'good side' (finished/decorative side) must face outward toward neighboring properties. While the City does not require a fence permit for typical residential fences, owners remain responsible for locating the fence on their own property, complying with the height and vision-triangle limits, and meeting other applicable Code provisions. Wisconsin grants West Allis general police-power authority to adopt these zoning standards under Wis. Stat. §62.23, and partition/line-fence rules between neighbors are governed by Wis. Stat. Chapter 90. Pool and other special-purpose enclosures may face additional height/barrier requirements outside §13.31.
