West Allis fences must use approved materials like commercial fencing, block, or treated lumber: sheet metal, salvage materials, electrified fencing, and single-strand wire fences are all prohibited.

Fence materials. Fences may be constructed of approved materials, such as commercial fence materials, concrete block or treated lumber, but may not include sheet metal, salvage materials or be electrified. Fence posts and supporting framework shall be on the interior side of the fence. A fence constructed of a single-strand wire or wires forming a single horizontal member is prohibited. Maintenance. All fences shall be kept in good repair and maintained as necessary to protect the general welfare and preserve the aesthetic character of the neighborhood and the community. Safety Hazards. No portion of any fence shall be so located as to impair or interfere with the visibility of pedestrians or vehicular movement, as provided in Sec. 13.30 of this Chapter. Exceptions. This section does not apply to fences in existence prior to July 1, 1988. Fences that do not conform to this section and in existence prior to this date shall not be altered or enlarged unless made to conform with this section. The Common Council, Plan Commission or Board of Appeals may approve fences that differ or exceed the location, height and construction, requirements of this section, in accordance with Sections 12.13, 12.15 and 12.16 of this Code. Full Breakdown

West Allis's fence construction rules limit residential fences to approved materials such as commercial fence products, concrete block, or treated lumber. Sheet metal and salvage materials are barred outright, and a fence may not be electrified. The code also targets barbed-style construction: a fence built from a single strand of wire, or wires forming just one horizontal member, is prohibited. Support posts and framework must face the interior of the property, and every fence must be kept in good repair to preserve the neighborhood's appearance.

Violations & Fines

Building a fence from sheet metal or salvage material, electrifying it, or stringing a single-strand wire fence violates Section 13.31 and can be ordered corrected by Code Enforcement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an electric fence to keep pets in my yard?
No. West Allis's fence code specifically prohibits electrified fencing on residential property, regardless of purpose.
Is a single-strand wire fence allowed?
No: a fence built of a single strand of wire, or wires forming only one horizontal member, is expressly prohibited under Section 13.31.
