Broward permits wood, aluminum, vinyl, masonry, and chain link but bans barbed wire and electric fencing in residential zones and requires hurricane-rated hardware throughout.
Broward County Code Chapter 39 and adopted Florida Building Code HVHZ provisions dictate acceptable fence materials. Permitted materials include pressure-treated wood, powder-coated aluminum, hurricane-grade PVC/vinyl, concrete masonry units (CMU), and galvanized chain link. Prohibited in residential districts: barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified strands, except on licensed agricultural parcels or with a commercial/industrial variance. All metal hardware must be hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel to resist the salt-air corrosion common in coastal Broward. Fences within 2,500 feet of the Atlantic are subject to additional corrosion-resistance specifications under the Florida Building Code. Painted and stained fences are allowed; however, many Broward HOAs limit colors to earth tones.
