Sparks, NV Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Sparks Municipal Code § 20.04.004 sets the materials, height and placement standards for every fence, wall and hedge in the city. Subsection B allows ordinary fencing of wire, chain link, wood, stone or comparable building material with Administrator approval, but draws sharp lines around security fencing. Barbed wire above ground is confined to the C1, C2, TC, I and PF zoning districts, none of them residential, and even there it must sit on top of an eight-foot fence with the wire and any extension arms kept entirely within the property line. Razor wire is more restricted still, permitted only in the I (Industrial) district and, like barbed wire, mounted atop an eight-foot fence with no extension past the property boundary.

Electric fencing is also I-district-only, and it comes with its own equipment rules: the energizer for an electric theft-deterrent device can draw no more than 12 volts DC, the electrified wire must sit entirely inside a non-electrical fence or wall at least six feet tall, the electrified portion itself may not exceed 10 feet in height, and warning signs reading 'Warning-Electric Fence,' at least 12 by 9 inches, must be posted on both sides of the fence at intervals no greater than 25 feet.

Outside of security fencing, ordinary residential fences and walls up to six feet may be built in any zoning district, but front and exterior side setbacks cap them at three feet, rising to four feet if the fence is at least 50 percent open construction (C.1). The one blanket exception to the barbed wire ban: public utilities in any zone may enclose equipment with barbed wire fencing up to nine feet total height (C.4).
