Stedman, NC Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

04(B) treats deteriorated or unsafe fences the same way the chapter treats unsafe structures: fences, retaining walls and similar landscape features must be firmly anchored to the ground and kept in good structural condition, free of deterioration, and any wooden fence prone to weathering must be maintained to resist it, with deteriorated features replaced, repaired or removed. The section then bans specific materials outright: electric fences, fences that are electrically charged, and fences built of barbed or razor wire are prohibited town-wide. That prohibition lifts only for fences enclosing livestock on a bona fide farm, and for fences serving a public or quasi-public institution's safety or security needs, but even those need the Code Enforcement Coordinator's approval.

04(B) also limits acceptable fence material generally to wood, masonry, chain link, wrought iron, vinyl, or a comparable material the Coordinator signs off on, and excludes any material never intended for fence use. The rule adds an aesthetic condition too: any support or bracing must face the interior of the property, and permitted fence colors must stay subtle rather than call negative or undue attention to the fence's presence.
