Taylorsville, UT Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Section 13.28.070 of the Taylorsville City Code, titled 'Barbed Wire,' prohibits fences containing strands of barbed wire, concertina, or other similar fencing on residential, mixed use, and open space properties, unless the city's Director specifically approves the wire for agricultural uses. Commercial, office, and industrial property owners face a narrower but related restriction: barbed wire and other security wire are not allowed on their fences when the property is adjacent to residential uses or located within public view, even though security fencing is otherwise more permissive on nonresidential land.

A companion provision in section 13.28.030(F) restates the same prohibition for security purposes specifically, barring barbed wire and other security wire on fences at commercial, industrial, business, and civic properties, and separately on residential properties, when the wire is intended to maintain security and prevent property loss or vandalism. Both sections sit in Chapter 13.28, Fencing/Retaining Walls, which the city adopted to set minimum and maximum fencing standards citywide and which the city has since amended, most recently by Ordinance 18-07 on February 28, 2018.

Any fence request that deviates from these material limits, including a claimed agricultural exception, requires the Director's specific sign-off rather than automatic approval, keeping the exemption narrow.
