Wyoming, MI Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Section 90-312 of the Wyoming Zoning Ordinance (Chapter 90 of the Code of Ordinances) sets the material and design standard for 'fences, walls and other protective barriers' anywhere in the city, from single-family lots to commercial parcels. Subsection (4) requires an ornamental appearance and flatly prohibits spikes, nails or other sharp instruments on the top or sides of a fence. The only carve-out is for barbed wire, which the code allows solely on top of fences located in the city's industrial zoning districts; a barbed-wire fence around a house, duplex or commercial storefront in a residential, business or form-based-code district is not permitted.

The rule works alongside the section's other subsections: any fence still needs building inspector approval before it goes up (subsection (1)), interior yard fences top out at six feet, and front-yard fencing, or the first ten feet of a secondary front yard, is capped at 36 inches. Because the material standard applies citywide rather than by district, it covers everything from a chain-link side-yard fence in a subdivision to a security fence around a warehouse near an industrial corridor, with only the industrial exception carved out.

18 and was most recently amended by Ordinance No. 9-25 on July 7, 2025, so property owners relying on older printed copies of the ordinance should confirm they have the current version before installing a fence.
