Annapolis Chapter 17.34 requires a building permit for all fence installations. Historic District fences additionally require Historic Preservation Commission approval before a permit is issued.
Annapolis Code Chapter 17.34 mandates a fence permit for any new fence installation, replacement, or material change. Applications are submitted to the city's Planning and Zoning Department. In the Historic District, the Historic Preservation Commission must review and approve the proposed fence design, materials, and color before the building permit is issued. Approved Historic District materials include wood picket, wrought iron, and brick. Chain link and vinyl are generally not approved in the Historic District. Permit fees are based on fence length and materials. Inspections are conducted upon completion.
Fence installed without permit: stop-work order, permit required retroactively with double fees. Historic District fence without HPC approval: $250 per day and removal order.
