A residential building permit is required for a fence that is over 7 feet high and has a solid, wind-blocking surface. You submit a permit application, a site plan, and an elevation view; the county inspects footings and the finished fence.
Fence permit applications are reviewed by the Larimer County Planning and Building Department. The Engineering Department also reviews plans if any part of the property is in a floodplain or if the fence affects traffic sight clearances on a public road or street. Submittals require a residential building permit application, three copies of a site plan showing fence location and total length, and two copies of an elevation view showing height, post size, post depth and concrete, on-center spacing, and rail sizing. Two inspections are required: a setback/footings inspection after holes are dug and before pouring concrete, and a framing/final inspection once the fence is built.
Installing a permit-required fence without one can require an after-the-fact permit and inspections; commercial fences need Planning review with engineer-stamped plans first.
