The Sahuarita Building Safety Division requires building permits for masonry block walls and fences exceeding 6 feet in height, as well as for retaining walls that exceed 4 feet in height from the lowest adjacent grade. Standard 6-foot residential perimeter walls constructed of masonry block typically require a permit because they are structural improvements. The permit process includes plan review to verify compliance with zoning setbacks, height limits, and material requirements, followed by inspection of the footing and finished wall. Simple wrought iron or wood fences under 6 feet may be exempt from building permits but must still comply with zoning height and setback requirements.
