Amarillo adopts the International Fire Code and prohibits accumulation of combustible vegetation that creates a fire hazard. The Fire Marshal enforces brush and weed clearance requirements on both residential and commercial properties.
Under Chapter 10-2 of the Amarillo Code of Ordinances, the city adopts the International Fire Code (IFC 2021) with local amendments. The IFC requires that accumulations of combustible materialsβincluding dry grass, weeds, and brushβbe removed or controlled to prevent fire spread. The Amarillo Fire Marshal's Office conducts inspections and may issue notices to abate vegetation hazards. Chapter 8-3 additionally classifies dangerous weeds (over 48 inches) as an immediate public nuisance subject to emergency abatement. Vegetation over 8 inches in residential areas is subject to nuisance-abatement procedures. City may abate at owner's expense plus a $75 administrative fee.
