Sanger, CA Fire Regulations: Brush Clearance (2026)

Sanger City Code Section 38-24.4(19) declares the following a public nuisance: weeds bearing downy or wingy seeds; sagebrush, chaparral, and brush that become a menace when dry; noxious or dangerous weeds; puncture vines and tumbleweed; poison oak and poison ivy posing a public health menace; and dry grass, stubble, brush, litter, or other flammable material that endangers public safety and creates a fire hazard. Section 38-24.4(20) extends this to dead, decayed, or hazardous trees and fire-demolition residue. Section 38-24.4(21) adds overgrown yard landscaping that provides harborage for rodents or other pests. Property owners who fail to maintain clearance after notice face the full nuisance abatement process, including city-ordered clearance at the owner's expense with costs placed as a lien on the property. While Sanger is within a Local Responsibility Area (not State Responsibility Area), California PRC Section 4291 defensible-space requirements of 100 feet of clearance around structures apply to properties near wildland-urban interface zones on the eastern edge of the city where agricultural and foothill terrain meets development. Given Sanger's hot Central Valley summers and surrounding dry grassland, the city conducts seasonal weed abatement campaigns, typically issuing notices in spring before fire season.
