Fire pit rules in Cedar Park, TX — also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances — cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Recreational fires and fire pits are allowed under the 2021 International Fire Code as adopted by Cedar Park (Article 5.01), but open burning of yard debris within city limits requires a Fire Marshal permit and is generally prohibited except in RA-zoned areas.
Cedar Park adopted the 2021 International Fire Code (IFC) including appendices B-I, L, and N via Article 5.01 of the Code of Ordinances (originally adopted 3/22/18, amended 12/3/20, 2/24/2022, and 10/26/2023). The IFC governs recreational fires citywide and within 5,000 feet of the corporate limits. Per Cedar Park Fire Department guidance, fires in an approved container (e.g., metal drum or commercial fire pit) must be a minimum of 15 feet from any structure; open fires must be 50 feet from structures; and small piles (3 ft diameter, 2 ft height) must be at least 25 feet from structures. A portable fire extinguisher with a minimum 4-A rating, or an approved equivalent (dirt, sand, or a charged garden hose), must be present and a competent person must remain in attendance until the fire is fully extinguished. Burning building materials, tires, shingles, household rubbish, and flammable liquids is prohibited.
Violations are enforced under the adopted Fire Code as a Class C misdemeanor. During an active Williamson or Travis County burn ban (which extends into the city), violations are punishable by a fine of up to $500. The Fire Marshal may order any fire extinguished immediately if it creates a nuisance, and burning privileges may be revoked.
