Fire pit rules in Federal Way, WA β also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances β cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Federal Way allows recreational fire pits under FWRC 13.31 (2021 IFC). Fires must be under 3 ft wide and 2 ft tall, use clean firewood, and be supervised with water nearby. Burn bans override local rules.
FWRC Chapter 13.31 adopts the 2021 International Fire Code and local amendments governing recreational fires in Federal Way. A recreational fire is defined as a small outdoor fire for cooking, pleasure, or ceremonial purposes, typically used in a fire pit, chiminea, or similar device. Local rules enforced by South King Fire and Rescue require: fuel area no larger than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height; only clean, dry, seasoned firewood (no trash, yard waste, treated wood, plastics, or construction debris); minimum 25-foot clearance from structures, fences, overhanging branches, and combustibles; constant supervision by a responsible adult; and a garden hose or fire extinguisher immediately accessible. Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) and Washington DNR frequently issue burn bans during dry summer months that suspend recreational burning. Gas and propane-fueled outdoor fireplaces are generally allowed year-round. Portable outdoor fireplaces and fire pits sold commercially are acceptable if used per manufacturer directions.
Violation of FWRC 13.31 fire code: civil infraction up to $500. Burning during an active PSCAA or DNR burn ban: fines up to $1,000 and liability for suppression costs. Recreational fires causing property damage: misdemeanor under FWRC 1.10.
