Fire pit rules in Kirkland, WA β also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances β cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Kirkland allows recreational fires in pits under 3 feet wide, 25 feet from structures, with only clean firewood under IFC 307 and PSCAA rules; yard debris burning is banned year-round.
Kirkland Fire Department enforces the International Fire Code Section 307 as adopted in KMC Title 21 (Fire Code) governing recreational fires. Portable outdoor fireplaces and in-ground fire pits are permitted without a permit if the fire area is under 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet tall, located at least 25 feet from any structure, overhang, deck, or combustible material, and fueled only by clean seasoned firewood, charcoal briquettes, or manufactured fire logs. Burning yard debris, leaves, construction scrap, pallets, treated lumber, or household trash is prohibited year-round throughout Kirkland and the entire Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) jurisdiction. Fires must be constantly attended by an adult capable of extinguishing them, with a garden hose, fire extinguisher, or bucket of water within arm's reach. Fire pits on decks must be solid-fuel units specifically listed for that installation or remain off decks entirely.
Failure to comply is a fire code violation subject to citation and fines; unattended fires may also result in reckless burning charges under RCW 76.04.
