Kirkland applies wildland-urban interface rules under IFC Chapter 49 to parcels near forested greenbelts, ravines, and Watershed Park; WUI construction standards may apply for new builds.
While Kirkland is not classified among Washington's highest-risk wildfire counties, the city adopted International Fire Code Chapter 49 (Wildland-Urban Interface) through KMC Title 21 due to its numerous forested ravines, steep wooded slopes, and greenbelt parcels. Properties adjacent to Watershed Park, Forbes Creek corridor, Juanita Bay Park, Yarrow Bay Wetlands, Denny Creek, and other forested open space may trigger WUI construction requirements for new buildings or substantial remodels. These include Class A or B roof coverings, ignition-resistant exterior materials, ember-resistant vents, and enclosed eaves. Defensible space out to 30 feet (Zone 1) and 100 feet (Zone 2) is recommended for parcels abutting wooded interface land. DNR maintains the Washington Wildfire Hazard Map, and Kirkland Fire Department coordinates with WA DNR under RCW 76.04 for wildfire response in interface areas. During red-flag weather, PSCAA and the state often declare outdoor burning bans.
Building permit denial for non-compliant materials in mapped WUI parcels; code enforcement actions under KMC 1.12 for unmaintained defensible space.
