Renton, WA Fire Regulations: Wildfire Zones (2026)

RMC 4-5-063 adopts the 2021 Edition of the International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC) as amended by the State Building Code Council in Chapter 51-55 WAC, excluding the code's own Chapter 1 Administration provisions; Renton substitutes its Construction Administrative Code (RMC 4-5-060) for that administrative chapter instead. 2, the IWUIC applies to construction, alteration, movement, repair, maintenance and use of any building, structure or premises located within the Wildland-Urban Interface Areas designated in the jurisdiction. Buildings or uses already in existence and legal when the code was adopted may continue, provided the continued use does not create an egregious danger to life or property, and any structure moved into or within the city must meet the standards for new construction.

4 makes the code apply to conditions arising after adoption and to conditions not legally existing at adoption, as well as to any condition the code official determines poses an egregious hazard to life or property, though provisions specifically written to reach existing conditions are retroactive by their own terms. n restates the same scope language for the WUI code alongside the city's other adopted construction codes. Enforcement runs through the Fire Code Official, defined under RMC 4-5-070 as the Fire Chief of the Renton Regional Fire Authority or a designee, who administers fire-related construction requirements citywide, including within designated WUI areas.
