Renton has wildland-urban interface areas along Cedar River, May Creek, and Cougar Mountain foothills. IFC Chapter 49 defensible space rules apply via RMC 4-5-070. WA DNR maps guide risk.
While Renton does not sit in the highest Washington DNR wildfire risk tier, several neighborhoods qualify as wildland-urban interface (WUI) under IFC Chapter 49 adopted via RMC 4-5-070. These include areas along the Cedar River canyon and greenbelt, properties bordering May Creek natural area, parcels abutting Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park to the east, forested lots in East Renton Highlands, and properties adjacent to the Maplewood golf course and park. Washington DNR publishes the Wildfire Hazard Potential map showing parcel-level risk ratings. WUI properties must maintain defensible space (Zones 1, 2, 3), use Class A or B roofing materials when replacing roofs, install ember-resistant vents where feasible, and clear gutters of needles and leaves each fall. New construction in mapped WUI areas must comply with IFC Chapter 49 building requirements including ignition-resistant siding within 5 feet of structures, enclosed soffits, and ember-resistant attic vents. Climate change has extended the Pacific Northwest fire season into September and October, so homeowners should prepare annually. Renton RFA offers Firewise USA community support and free home assessments.
WUI construction violations can delay certificates of occupancy and trigger re-inspection fees. Defensible space failures can be abated as nuisances under RMC 1-3-3.
