Renton bans the sale, possession, and discharge of all consumer fireworks year round under RMC 4-5-070 and RCW 70.77.395 home rule authority. Fines reach 500 dollars per violation and fires may trigger civil liability.
Under Renton Municipal Code 4-5-070 (adopting International Fire Code amendments) and the city's home rule authority preserved by RCW 70.77.395, the sale, possession, storage, use, and discharge of all consumer fireworks, including state-approved ground-based devices like fountains, sparklers, snakes, and ground spinners, is prohibited within Renton city limits. This ban became effective after a voter-approved measure and has been in force for years. RCW 70.77.160 defines consumer fireworks, and the city has opted out of allowing any sales or use under the home rule exception. Aerial fireworks, bottle rockets, firecrackers, and M-80s are classified as dangerous fireworks under RCW 70.77.136 and are banned statewide without a public display license. The ban is strictly enforced around July 4th and New Year's Eve by Renton Police and Renton Regional Fire Authority. Residents are directed to attend professional displays in Seattle, Bellevue, or regional events. Violations creating a fire risk to Cedar River greenbelt, wildland areas, or structures can result in criminal charges and full civil restitution for damages.
Civil infractions up to 500 dollars per violation under RMC 1-10. Dangerous fireworks are a gross misdemeanor under RCW 70.77.485 with up to 364 days in jail and 5,000 dollars fine. Property owner liable for fire damage.
