Fire pit rules in Kane County, IL β also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances β cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
In unincorporated Kane County, recreational fires and fire pits may burn only brush (tree limbs, branches, twigs), not landscape waste or garbage. Recreational fires may not exceed 3'x3'x3' and must follow the county's standard burning restrictions.
The Kane County Health Department Burning Regulations allow "Burning of brush for recreational fires, but the fire cannot be larger than 3'x3'x3'." Brush may also be burned in "fire places and self-contained outdoor wood burning devices." Only brush is permitted fuel β burning "Landscape Waste" (grass, leaves, shrubbery cuttings, flowers, weeds), garbage, hazardous materials or chemicals is prohibited regardless of exemptions. Any fire must be supervised until extinguished, with a fire extinguisher, garden hose or water source available at the site, and kept at least 20 feet from any building, structure or property line. Incorporated cities (Aurora, Elgin, St. Charles) set their own, often stricter, rules.
A fine up to $500 shall punish any person who violates any provision. Complaints go to the Kane County Health Department (630) 444-3040.
