Montgomery County, VA Fire Regulations: Fireworks (2026)

Outside Blacksburg and Christiansburg, anyone wanting to display fireworks, defined broadly under Section 4-21 to include firecrackers, torpedoes, skyrockets and similar explosive or inflammable items, but excluding sparklers, fountains, caps for pistols and pinwheels, must apply in triplicate to the county administrator under Section 4-23. The application states the time, place and type of fireworks, and names at least one experienced participant. Once approved, the administrator marks the application as approved and dated, which starts a thirty-day storage clock: all fireworks covered by the permit must be displayed or discharged within that thirty-day period under Section 4-24.

One approved copy stays on file with the county, and the applicant keeps a copy for sixty days after the display, with a third copy on hand at the display site itself under Section 4-25. Every display must be supervised by a county peace officer present at the scene under Section 4-26, and no more than three people besides that officer may participate in the display, all over eighteen years old, under Section 4-27. Before use, permitted fireworks must be stored in a metal container inside a masonry, concrete or other firm building inaccessible to the public, and cannot sit in county storage for more than thirty consecutive days under Section 4-28. Spectators must stay at least fifty feet back from the display or discharge point under Section 4-29.
