The City of Sonoma prohibits the sale, possession, use, or discharge of any fireworks – including 'Safe and Sane' fireworks and sparklers – inside city limits. Cloverdale is the only city in Sonoma County that still allows state-approved fireworks; everywhere else, including unincorporated Sonoma County, all fireworks are banned year-round.
The City of Sonoma has adopted the California Fire Code, which under California Health & Safety Code §12500–12728 (State Fireworks Law) gives local jurisdictions authority to ban Safe and Sane fireworks. Per the Sonoma County Fire Prevention Division, 'the sale, possession or use of fireworks of any type is not permitted' in the City of Sonoma. Dangerous fireworks (skyrockets, firecrackers, M-80s, mortars, anything that explodes or flies) are illegal statewide under Cal. H&S §12505 and §12677. Public displays by licensed pyrotechnic operators require a state license under H&S §12640 plus a local CFC §5601 permit issued by the Fire Marshal. Sonoma County Code Chapter 13, Article VI also bans fireworks throughout unincorporated Sonoma County.
Possession or discharge of dangerous fireworks is a misdemeanor under Cal. H&S §12700, punishable by up to one year in county jail and/or a fine of up to $50,000; possession of more than 25 pounds (gross weight) is a felony. Possession or use of any Safe and Sane fireworks inside Sonoma city limits is enforced under the adopted Fire Code and Sonoma Municipal Code §1.20.010 as an infraction ($100/$200/$500 escalating) or misdemeanor. Property owners can be held civilly liable for any fireworks discharged on their property, and increased patrols are conducted around the Fourth of July.
