Sterling Heights restricts consumer fireworks under Michigan PA 256 of 2011 (as amended by PA 65 of 2018) to the day before, day of, and day after 11 designated federal holidays. Use is prohibited on all other days. Fireworks cannot be ignited on public property or while under the influence. The state $1,000 fine applies for non-permitted-day use.
Sterling Heights, like other Michigan cities over 50,000 residents, adopted the maximum local restriction allowed by the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act (PA 256 of 2011, as amended by PA 65 of 2018). Consumer-grade (1.4G) fireworks legally sold in Michigan may be ignited only on the day before, day of, and day after each of 11 designated federal holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, and others listed in MCL Β§28.457.
Use is prohibited on every other day of the year and is subject to a state-mandated $1,000 civil fine. On permitted days, the use window typically closes at 11:45 PM, with an extended cutoff of 1:00 AM on July 5 and January 1. Fireworks may not be ignited on any public property β streets, sidewalks, parks, schools, or city-owned land β and may not be discharged on private property without the owner's consent.
Discharge while under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances is prohibited regardless of date and may be charged as a misdemeanor. Display (commercial) fireworks require a state license, city fire marshal review, and proof of insurance. The Sterling Heights Fire Department is the primary enforcement contact for fireworks-related fire damage and injuries.
Igniting consumer fireworks on a non-permitted day carries a $1,000 civil fine per MCL Β§28.457. Discharge on public property or while intoxicated may be charged as a misdemeanor. Property damage creates personal civil liability. Report violations to Sterling Heights Police at (586) 446-2800 or Fire Department at (586) 446-2980.
