Outdoor burning rules in San Diego County, CA β also called the burn ban, open burning, or fire restriction ordinance β set when you can burn yard waste, debris, or run a recreational fire.
Open burning in unincorporated San Diego County is heavily regulated by the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) and the County Fire Authority. Agricultural burning requires APCD permits. Residential yard waste burning is generally prohibited. Recreational fires in approved containers may be allowed.
The San Diego County APCD regulates all open burning under Rule 64 and Rule 64.1. Agricultural burning requires an APCD burn permit and must comply with smoke management plans. Residential burning of yard waste, trash, or debris is generally prohibited. Recreational fires (campfires, fire pits) are allowed in approved containers with restrictions: must be attended at all times, no larger than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet high, located at least 25 feet from structures and combustibles. Red Flag Warning days and APCD no-burn days prohibit all outdoor burning. The County Fire Authority may impose additional restrictions during high fire danger periods.
Illegal burning violations can result in fines from the APCD and the County Fire Authority. Fines range from $100 to $25,000 depending on the violation. Causing a wildfire through illegal burning can result in criminal charges and civil liability.
