Cheektowaga, NY Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Cheektowaga Code § 70-29O sets the Town's LP-gas permit trigger: a fire code permit is required 'for each installation of liquefied petroleum gas employing a container or an aggregate of interconnected containers of over 500 gallons' water capacity (100 pounds) and for each permanent installation, irrespective of the size of the containers. ' Where an adjoining occupancy, nearby buildings or other unusual conditions call for it, § 70-29O(2) lets the Inspector require plans before installation, and a permit issues once those plans show code compliance.

Installers must keep records of every LP-gas installation that did not need a permit, other than gas appliance hookups or swapped portable cylinders, and make that log available to the Inspector or the fire company on request under § 70-29O(3). The permit itself runs for one year from issuance once the Town Board's fee is paid, under § 70-27F, and it is not transferable; any change of use or occupancy at the premises requires a new one under § 70-27A. Before issuing any fire code permit the Inspector must inspect and approve the receptacles, vehicles, buildings or storage areas involved under § 70-27B, and the permit and application must stay on the premises for inspection by the Fire or Police Departments or the Inspector under § 70-27D.
