Maple Grove City Code Sec. 18-94 prohibits storing portable LP gas (propane) containers inside buildings; they must be stored outside in an approved locking enclosure. The enclosure may not be within 10 ft of any exit door, window, crawlspace, or stairway, or within 15 ft of a direct-vent appliance intake, ventilation intake, or ignition source.
Propane storage in Maple Grove is governed by City Code Sec. 18-94 (Ordinance 20-07, amending the LP gas provisions of the Minnesota State Fire Code) on top of the adopted State Fire Code. The ordinance prohibits storing portable containers of liquefied petroleum gases (propane) inside buildings. Portable containers - whether empty, partially full, or full - must be stored outside of buildings in an approved locking enclosure protected against tampering. The required LP gas enclosure may not be located within 10 feet of any exit doorway, window, crawlspace opening, or stairway, or in any location that would impede egress, and may not be within 15 feet of any intake to a direct-vent gas appliance, intake to a mechanical ventilation system, or any external ignition source such as an open flame, a compressor, or a central air-conditioning compressor. For larger bulk installations, Sec. 18-92 carries the State Fire Code requirement that where the maximum aggregate capacity of any one installation exceeds 1,000 gallons, a 300-foot separation must be provided from any residential property line. Temporary heating using LP gas requires a permit from the Fire Chief through the fire and building inspection services department (Sec. 18-77). The ordinance also reiterates that portable unvented fuel-fired heaters, including propane or natural gas patio heaters and patio fire pits, may not be used indoors or inside any enclosure.
Violations of the LP gas storage provisions are enforced under Chapter 18 (Sec. 18-73) as a misdemeanor, and each day a prohibited condition continues after notice may be a separate offense. Temporary LP gas heating without the required permit is a violation. The Fire Chief may order correction of any hazardous condition.
