Saint Paul Fire Department enforces Minnesota State Fire Code limits on propane storage at homes and businesses, capping residential aggregate liquefied petroleum gas and regulating outdoor cylinder placement.
Saint Paul Code Ch. 167 adopts the Minnesota State Fire Code, which incorporates the International Fire Code Chapter 61 and NFPA 58 for liquefied petroleum gas. One- and two-family dwellings may store no more than two propane cylinders not exceeding 20 pounds each on a covered porch or in an attached carport, with additional containers required to be outside at code-mandated distances from buildings, openings, and ignition sources. Refilled cylinders cannot be stored indoors. Commercial fuel-tank installations require an SPFD permit, separation distances, vehicle-impact protection, and proper labeling. Residential underground propane installations need both a fire permit and DSI mechanical permit.
Storing propane cylinders inside basements or attics, exceeding aggregate limits, placing tanks too close to ignition sources, or installing commercial tanks without SPFD permits triggers fire code citations and removal orders.
