Topeka, KS Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Topeka's propane storage limit for residential fuel use is written specifically into Chapter 14.65, Manufactured Homes and Trailers, which governs licensed mobile home parks rather than single-family lots citywide. TMC § 14.65.350 allows natural and liquefied petroleum gas to be used for fuel at individual mobile home units, but caps it: no unit may have more than two 100-pound tanks of liquefied petroleum gas in or upon its allotted space. The section sits in Subarticle IV, Fire Protection, immediately after § 14.65.330, which subjects every mobile home park to the City's adopted fire code, and § 14.65.340, which requires parks to be kept free of litter, rubbish and flammable materials at all times. Section 14.65.360 rounds out the subarticle by confining open fires in the park to stoves, approved incinerators, or other equipment built for that purpose.

Enforcement of the mobile home park articles runs through park management and City inspection officers: § 14.65.370 makes the park's licensee responsible for operating in compliance with the article and keeping the park's facilities in good repair and sanitary condition, and § 14.65.390 requires management to notify occupants of the article's requirements. Because § 14.65.330 folds in the City's adopted fire code, a propane tank stored beyond the two-tank, 100-pound-each limit is both a Chapter 14.65 violation and potentially a fire code violation, subjecting the operator to inspection by the Fire Department (cross-referenced at TMC 2.20.030) and the Director of Environmental Code Services, who is empowered to inspect the park's register and premises under § 14.65.380(b).
