York County, VA Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

The gas permit fee table applies the identical $90-per-tank charge to both size tiers the county lists, "0 to 500 gallons" and "501 gallons and over," so the cost of permitting a residential cylinder and a large commercial LP tank is the same. A separate line item covers gas distribution piping: a $90 base fee plus $10 for each additional outlet, whether the fuel is natural gas or LP. This fee schedule sits inside the Mechanical Permits subsection, meaning any LP tank installation, replacement or alteration is treated as mechanical work requiring its own written application before work starts, per the general lead-in to § 7.1-8.

The county backs the permit requirement up on the utility side, too: § 7.1-13(a) makes it unlawful for any utility "providing electric or gas service in the county" to connect its gas supply lines to a building unless the gas piping installation "has been inspected and approved by the county," and § 7.1-13(b) lets the building code official, sheriff's office or fire and life safety division order a supplier to sever gas service in an emergency. Because no distance-from-structure or maximum-gallon limit appears in this chapter, York County's local propane rule is entirely a permitting and inspection gate rather than a quantity restriction.
