Ankeny, IA Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Ankeny Code of Ordinances Section 175.39 adds IBC Section 907.2.24, requiring Group R-4 occupancies, residential board and care or assisted living facilities, to install fire alarm systems and smoke alarms as set out in Sections 907.2.24.1 through .3. A manual fire alarm system activating the occupant notification system is required unless the building is not more than two stories with sleeping units and contiguous attic and crawl spaces separated by not less than 1-hour fire partitions and each unit exiting directly to a public way, court or yard, or unless the building is fully sprinklered with notification tied to water flow, or unless manual boxes at nurses' stations would be redundant given constant staffing and compliant travel distances.

Automatic smoke detection is separately required in corridors and common areas open to corridors, though not inside individual sleeping units or kitchens, unless the building is sprinklered throughout or has no interior corridors serving sleeping units. The smoke alarms covered by Section 907.2.24.3 must be installed per Section 907.2.10. Section 175.40 additionally requires any fire alarm system required by the building or fire code to be monitored by a UL 827-listed central station under NFPA 72, except that monitoring is not required for one- and two-family dwelling sprinkler and alarm systems.
