Full Breakdown

Under Sec. 5.16(e)(2) of the Building Maintenance article, every dwelling must have single or multi-station smoke alarms at the ceiling or wall outside each sleeping area, inside every room used for sleeping, and on each story of the unit (crawl spaces and uninhabitable attics excepted). Alarms must run on building wiring with battery backup where commercial power is available, and multiple alarms in a unit must be interconnected so one activation sounds all of them. The building official enforces this under the property maintenance provisions of Chapter 5.

Violations & Fines

Noncompliance is a property maintenance violation the building official can order corrected; battery-only alarms are allowed only where a home isn't served by commercial power or wiring access would require opening finished walls.
